Summers End πŸ’›πŸ”†πŸ”…

Well it’s that time of year again the holidays are almost over mums and dads are rushing around getting ready for the new school term and it’s at this stage that mum is thinking of her next home project and believe me there is always one if not two rooms on the agenda. It may not be a full make over just some of the old pieces that need to be replaced. But if it’s an overal job I suggest you use a mood board the first thing is the paint or paper needed for your interior walls, pin the colour and paper design on to your board and take it with you when you head out checking for blinds or Curtain Matieral etc, it will give you a better idea when choosing the new furnishings. 🎨

A lot of you know my feelings about mix and matching dark wood with colour. If you are doing the room with a lot of dark wood then make your statement piece a coulourful WoW piece it won’t let you down.  The same applies if you are going to use shabby chic, brighter colourful woods, you just have to find that dark  wow centrepiece.
We all love a new piece of furniture to add new life to a room, but new doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be new never used before, using an antique or vintage or even up-cycled  pieces will probably last you a lot longer then some of the pieces made today. But that’s not to say all furniture made today isn’t of good quality, but it can be costly. But to recycle ♻️ is good for the environment and you end up with a piece of history that just got a makeover, also it is something you can do yourself if you have the mind to. I have a mind to ! but let me tell you I do struggle with it.

This piece was really looking sad and wore out when we recused  it, it is a beautiful Old French Oak Sideboard painted in our mix, Navy Black and then we just sanded buffed and polished the top to give an added texture to the piece, we also replaced the hardware because the originals were to damaged.

The piece above went off to a new home and we replaced it with this beautiful Victorian Dresser

Here at Shabby Shik Emporium we are very fortunate to have found 4 very talented designers that work with us, we have pieces that we have commitioned either by Alex Designs or Sylvia’s Up~Cycled and by  Designes by Carol we also have smaller pieces by the Lovely ladies at Crafty Closet. So it’s a real cottage industry going on here at the moment, I love to send a battered old piece off to have its magic done and then I can hardly wait for it to come back. πŸ˜€

These Chairs are due back from Alex Designes tomorrow and I am just dying to see the transformation,  you will be able to check them out tomorrow on our Facebook page or look out for them later in this blog.

You also can find several of our Advert’s on the Donedeal website if you want to keep up to date on what is in stock. If I can suggest two things here! First: If there is a piece you really like, that you found either on our Facebook page, Donedeal or our blog please just pick up the phone and give us a call or PM us on Facebook or donedeal to check the piece is still here for sale so you don’t have a disappointed journey especially as a lot of our clients travel some distance up and the country. Second: if you haven’t called in advance about a piece you like and you don’t see it in the Cabin just ask as it is very possible it is stored in the house…πŸ˜€

We have been asked several times if we ever intend to have a Sale and we do and we have.  We always put a notice on Facebook of when we intend to have a sale and will post a reminder maybe 2 days pryer too, we also post it on Donedeal. All our sales are genuine flash sales they are today’s piece that are in the Cabin and the Sale will either run from Monday to Friday or from Friday to Sunday and usually with 10% to 20% Off Brown or Shabby Chic Furniture or sometimes both.

We may have have a free shipping sale for our Paul Marius bags and satchels, we are bound to the price of the bags. So know matter what store you buy a Paul Marius Bag in it will cost the same…

You will find us on the R551 from Tralee to Ballyheigue and through Ardfert on to the Kilmoyle Cross & Ballyheigue sign post staying on the road to Ballyheigue you come into a straight Stretch of road and we are about 200 yards up the road on the right hand side.

Creating A Room with Antique or/and Vintage On Budget!

My Creating a Room with Antique or/and Vintage Furniture on Budget. Can it be done? Well  yes of course it can, depending on the budget and how realistic you are. Of course the bigger the budget the better chance of finding the pieces you really want in your room. But sometimes that is the hardest part, finding those very pieces. Be it a Library, Living room, Dining room, Bedroom, Kitchen, Bathroom or Study.

So what kind of room would you like to create and for what kind of budget? Well let’s say you have a room 15f by 15f which is a nice size room, would you like it to be just a living space or also one that incorporates a study/work space? So how much do you want to spend on each piece? What are the most important pieces you want in this room? Do you want just antique or maybe just vintage or would you like to combine both? Would you be open to a reproduction piece if chances of finding what you really want are way beyond your budget? And would shabby chic pieces be an option?

Ok so let’s say we are working with a small tight budget, we have to be very realistic here we may find what you want but it needs a bit of work to bring it back to life are you prepared to put in some work for the pieces you so covet? So I guess it would be fair to say such a piece would not be Mint (a word I personally hate)  I myself like to see signs of a previous life other wise I feel it’s a little bit pointless and I might as well have dropped into that flat pack store!!! And know I don’t mean falling a part at the seems but in all honesty that’s do able to if you have the time and patience something I lack πŸ˜€

For me it’s all about the history of a piece, I wonder who might have sat in that Windsor Chair or who sat at the Friars table or maybe what Jewels did that dressing chest once hold. I do appreciate that some people invest heavally on pieces that are outstanding and build collections more for portfolios rather than usage and how it preserves them for future generations, but personally that’s not for me. But that’s not to say, if giving a budget we won’t try our hardest to find the finest pieces the budget can buy, so we can achieve what the client wants and that is after all the most important aspect of the job and the budget too of course.

However and I know I have mentioned this before in a previous blog or two, but sometimes it really only takes one great piece to add great value to any room. Like the dining room, you might just focus on an antique table or in the bedroom maybe a vintage dressing chest and so on,,,

The other thing I so love to do which always works is to add a splash of colour with dark wood or a really nice dark statement piece in between a room full of colour. It’s like a piece we have in the Cabin at the minute, a beautiful duck egg blue shabby chic’ed mirrored chest. It’s the one piece that draws people in and the piece that is always admired, as it is settled in between a collection of dark woods.

Shabby chic is almost a dirty word to the purest, again on a personal level I love it but only if it’s done really really well and we are lucky to have a lady with a dab hand at recreating beauty either it be antique or vintage pieces.

The next thing your room requires is the glue that brings it all together. Ceramics, glass, mirrors, crystal, silver, marble, art, material etc, so finding those pieces that reflect who you are, what your history and future is is vitally important, these are pieces your grandchildren will remember fondly in many years to come.πŸ˜€

The Shabby Shik Emporium Cabin contains all of the about and that is what we profess to be an Emporium. We’d like it all to be the real deal but sometimes we have to be realistic and work with the budget we have, after all there is nothing to say you can’t replace each piece there after. We have added a little video below of the Cabin be sure to look out for my Oscar for worst camera work ever as you look around, in my defence it is pretty difficult to do while trying to propel yourself along in your wheelchair πŸ˜€

So if you want that room to materialise into reality please do come along and see us the only thing you pay for is the furniture and the glue ☺️ that binds it all together.

But please do note we are not painters or curtain makers!  Once you have that sorted then we are just room dressers πŸ˜‰

Well that’s all for this week we’ll catch up again in a week or two. You know where to find us if you want us.

Taking The Good With The Bad

Well it’s been a while since my last post here we had a lot going on we’ve been busy which is great, people are beginning to find us here at the Shabby Shik Emporium and are surprised when they do.
It’s so lovely to hear their compliments and they all say the same thing “You just don’t find to many places like this anymore, it’s great” So at least I feel like we made the right decision I know it will take time and I’m trying my best to do what I can to help it along.

Our furniture is loved and moving, our Patchwork and Handmade Bears seem to get legs and roll out of there own accord in the nicest possible way of course our ceramics and glass which I suppose was a little slower then our other pieces is now to heading out the door without a backward glance.
We have now also added Vintage Clothing to see how that goes it’s slow for now so I’m not to sure just yet as it’s early days we have also added Indian Katha’s to the mix and so far so good.

I’d love to do more local craft work if I could it’s just finding the space really. I seen some local Patchwork Quilting work by my good friend here Cathy and oh my god talk about Devine I asked her why she doesn’t sell them and she told me honestly it wouldn’t pay her and I can understand where she is coming from some people just don’t get it.
To some I sell secondhand furniture, bears and bags and old books. And I just don’t get that they can’t see that the Georgian elbow chair they are sitting in is over a hundred and fifty years old and has been seat in my generations, has a history beyond anything we can imagine and has been lovely preserved so it can last another hundred years or more. It’s the same with books some of our Children’s books are over a hundred years old, one lady recently said ‘you can buy a new one in a shop for less than that !’ This was an 1934 copy of Winnie the Pooh it’s second edition in perfect condition πŸ™‚ at the point I give up, it can be so frustrating and I just want to close the door and head back to bed and say sod it. But I realise to it can be so rewarding there are horses for courses and we just have to take the good with the not so good on the journey then I just settle down and get stuck in again.

There is nothing more satisfying then finding a piece in need of TLC that needs to be taking back to the beauty it once was to get the juices flowing in the brain. Maybe at some stage when I find the right project we’ll do a step by step for you here on Jennies World. We also plan to do a Video piece on Shabby Shik Emporium in the next few weeks so you can put a face to our little store and stock.

Ok so I’m going to leave you with some pic’s of some of the stock you haven’t seen before hopefully πŸ™‚ !!! And I promise not to leave it so long next time. πŸ™‚

The Wonders Of The Web

Well I think a lot of you know we also sell direct from our store page on Facebook. So that last week has been quite busy pricing every stock piece we have, before we leaving for holidays in Furteventura in the Canaries for a week. So I hope you won’t miss us to much. πŸ˜‰ but to be honest I’m so not looking forward to it.;(

For any of you wanting to call to the store you can do so, we are leaving our main man in charge and he’ll take care of the store. But any thing that goes through our Facebook page store I will be dealing with direct from my sun lounger I hope. I’ll still be taking care of the page and our products and relaying any deliveries to our man in charge. So no worries I just hope we have a store to come home too. πŸ™‚ but no really the man of the house has more then enough experience in retail to get by. πŸ™‚

No really I have to admit I am so not looking forward to this trip. Having to be hauled up the steps on a skinny Plint and hoisted into my seat is a nightmare and it’s at this point I just want to go home ;(

Anyway some of you may be unaware that we also sell some really cool handbags, we also have a fantastic selection of Paul Marius Vintage buffalo leather bags, idea for the new student the bags will fit everything from your laptop to your a4 folders. There bags are from a French designer and are excellent value. I have never seen such tailored pieces. Also It would be a really lovely gift for Father’s Day.
And the bigs sell from €89 + €14 postage and the messenger bags are €99.95 plus €14 postage or call in and buy from direct from our store.

Our customers have very kindly gotten behind us and have been encouraging us to cater for something for everyone and we are really hoping that we do.
But even new products have to have that vintage retro look and feel to it. πŸ™‚

We had a lot of small delivery’s this week, from our jewellery to our beautiful silk shawls, rag dolls, our beautiful oilcloth messenger bags and of course the beautiful Red Tote bag by London Access.
With post going out to Meath, Cork Dublin and Tipp, thank you all for your custom we really do appreciate it. πŸ™‚

We’d like to do something special for an official opening if anyone has any ideas we ‘d very much like to hear them. We had thought we’d have a tea by the sea party what do you think ?
I’ll Leave you to think on it and I will leave you with some pic’s of what’s to come. I just know you will love them all πŸ™‚

We have sent out parcels to Tipp, Dublin, Cork , Meath20140609-234110-85270361.jpg20140609-234110-85270639.jpg20140609-234110-85270887.jpg

Grand Opening On Hold But Not For Long !!!

Well folks I do what I usually do, kill myself pulling and dragging what I shouldn’t and then end up on the flat of my back which is exactly what happened on Friday after going at it like a mad woman all week. πŸ˜€ !!!

But still it turned out to be great weekend weather wise and and store wise even though apart from advertising on Facebook to say we were opening we didn’t do anymore then hang the beach toys outside the door. This was enough to have a few people wondering in good for us.

Of course we had painters in painting the outside of our property, which after 8 years standing naked to the world was not before time πŸ™‚ !!!
I would add a pic but I’d need to be on the other side of the road before I could do that. Sadly the painter needs to come back again because we ran out of paint for the top coat on the reveres and tops of the outside walls and when hubby went to woodies they were all out. So this now means another days work to finish it off.

My little fury friends our cats arrived down this weekend to and had a taste of freedom outside which was good for them. It’s not possible to let them out in Limerick as the road up there is crazy busy. And we have lost many of our little friends up there so it was purely out of safety we kept them inside. I am just hoping they won’t wonder to far off the beating track here. The road can also be busy but at least here they have over an acre to wonder around before the reach the road. I have to admit I was worried but in fairness they are taking it easy they are not wondering to far let’s hope it stays like that. πŸ™‚ !!!

Well the store came together it’s good the girls didn’t get here until Saturday but the man of the house did some Stirling work for which I am very grateful and Ness got stuck into it today with the pricing which can be very time consuming as everything and I mean everything had to be not just priced but coded and logged.

Our eldest daughter had her second exhibition this weekend and even though they weren’ to far away she opted to stay over there with the other exhibitors to lend her support. Which I think was very good of her.

So schools out for the summer well at least for the secondary schools. But exams start on Wednesday and to everyone one of you sitting these exams please try not to stress, do what you can yes, give it your best shot yes, as you finish each paper that’s it it’s done don’t look back that papers it’s over just head on to the next and apply the same principle here. I wish each and everyone of you the very best wish’s and I know a very smart young teacher who says, you’ll get whatever or wherever is meant to be for you and she is so right.
There is nothing to say you can’t try again it’s never the end of the road. And I know now from experience she is so right she so is, how she got so wise I don’t know but I do know the knowledge she imparts to her students will stand them the test of time and I love her for it.

Well guys my week as you have just read was very sedate in comparison to last week.
I’ll leave you with a few pic’s of the store which I had taken on Friday there have been a few changes already well you know yourself, you move the piece to fifty different other places before putting it back where you had it in the first place πŸ™‚

Cheers folks we’ll catch up again next week.20140602-205501-75301091.jpg

The Ups And Down’s

Well here we are again ready to start another week. But that’s next weeks story isn’t it so let’s see the ups and downs of this week. Well let’s see the Carpenter was back on the job and he worked through all weathers while I watched and prayed he didn’t get electrocuted every time he cut a piece of timber on the saw bench. πŸ™‚
I have to say I couldn’t recommend the man highly enough. He has done an outstanding (mostly in the rain:-) job, truly fantastic. I can now for the first time in two and a half years wheel myself outside all by myself and down not one but two ramps made perfectly for me, that means I can now run away from home!!!

Next on the seen we had the electrician who gave a full days work wiring the Log Cabinet (as my 6 year old Neigbhour likes to call it πŸ™‚ then down to the workshop to wire a job we intended doing when we moved in but I suppose better late then never.

As the Carpenter came to a close on the decking the painter arrived to tell me actually he had fitted me in to have the rooms I wanted doing inside the house on Saturday. I looked at the man and I looked around at all the furniture and thought where the feck am I going to put it all. πŸ™‚
But the man insisted it was no problem and he would be on at 8:30 on the Saturday morning, I said ok but thought he has got to be kidding me, you can’t swing a cat in here. No sorry we’re not cat swingers honestly :-).
Anyway Thursday evening came around and the sun was settling in and Mick the carpenter was getting his gear together to lock up for the night and just as he pick up the saw from the work bench the wind got up and the saw dust got me right in the eyes:-)
Oh dear lord the pain I bought three different creams two different eye washes. I used cool boiled water everything an anything you name it I bought it. πŸ™‚
The pain nearly drove me insane, Ok I admit I have been at the insane point for a while, !!! but now I felt even more insane. Whether my eyes were opened or closed it feel like someone was scratching them from the inside out. I know I’m never with out an arse or an elbow am I ;( what can I say!!! ❀ xx

So Saturday morning arrived as did the painter Pat, and I not having had a wink of sleep headed for the next best place to bed down the couch of course. πŸ™‚ Where I finally fell into a dead sleep I say dead because it seems my husband tried to wake me several times to ask about the paint etc, and I was unresponsive:-) Of course I don't believe a bit of it.
By the time I was finished my beauty sleep painter Pat was just finishing off and was in the tidy up stage and you know what he is a great man. πŸ™‚ He moved all the furniture and covered everything completely and then put everything back where it came from, by that I mean all the other furniture belonging to the Shabby Shik Emporium Log Cabinet!!! πŸ˜‰ that we can't move out first off until carpenter Mick puts up the sheeting inside and then ready for painting.
Oh holy god another job needing doing well the lassies better get the backsides in motion and get down here and give mother a hand other wise we will never be sorted. πŸ™‚ ❀

Ok let's see what goodies arrived this week, well there is the beautiful hand printed scarves and hand bags. Jewellery from both Carol Shaw And Trinkets jewellery designers. Oh Yes and the beautiful rocking horse it really would be the most fantastic gift for any child. I just ❀ it and so will you too when you see it.
We also found some really cool buckets, Spades and skittle sets for the beach and the rag dolls too of course. We are also still waiting on the arrival of our silk wraps so I am hoping that they should arrive this coming week fingers crossed.

It's that time of year again graduation time and my little tall lady is graduating from her Music and Music performance course on Wednesday evening. She also received her exams result in which we wish her the very best. She has worked so hard for this in the last 2 years this has to be her year. Regardless of the outcome we love her very much and are very proud of her, she put her heart and soul into this course and she made some wonderful friends and whatever road she wishes to pursue after, we'll be there supporting her a long the way with love ❀ and encouragement always :-).
Now I think I better settle the head down and sleep for a while and then let's see what tomorrow brings πŸ™‚ here are a few pic's of what we gathered for the store this week. πŸ™‚

Also remember you can find us on our Facebook page Shabby Shik Emporium
