Busy Days For Spring @ Shabby Shik Emporium

Well it is amazing how the Seasons come around we are heading into spring and the first stirrings of colour 🌸are beginning to appear it won’t be long now until the daffodils line the Avenues with there lovely bell shaped heads sit nodding at us.

Spring is a real season for out with the old and in with the new, ‘but that saying’ never quite seemed right with me. Things are not so much old but used and loved and it is perfectly alright to move them on to someone else, who is sure to and will love it until they too are ready for a change its the circle of life.

After all that is how we have antique or vintage piece in the first place, it came to be either handed down through generations of families or else sold or restored my someone else who wanted to love them some more. So no matter what the piece whether it was made today or many many moons ago, someone will always want it and love it for what it might be in there time.

So you are going out in search of new pieces of furniture to feather your nest again. So for some this is the fun part and others the dread of spending huge money on furniture. But chances are you could deck the house out if you were to check out some of the online for sale sites of second hand Antique and Vintage Furniture of which there are many.

So my advice for what it’s worth or whichever way you want to go about it, is to buy good quality secondhand pieces they are there to be had.
So here’s what you do, you find that one great piece of Antique, Vintage, Handmade or just Unique item that one expensive Wow piece.
Anything after that can be just run of the mill but at the same time the best you can both possible afford.
So when you move up the ladder which you will your Antique and Vintage pieces should at the very least give you back your initial investment.

So we here at shabby Shik Emporium are very excited by some of the pieces coming in this week and early next week it is a collective mixture of Antique & Vintage brown Furniture and likewise with Vintage Shabby Chic πŸ™‚ as it is preserving the piece in one way or another is no bad thing it’s still an antique or vintage piece and it’s still keeping it together.

So be sure and think about what you want to buy when starting out. If you have something in mind and you can’t find it in the stores then talk to the store owners tell them what you’re looking for. What kind of a budget you have, so the better the condition of the piece the more of your budget you will be prepared to spend.

These are just a few logical tips on Furniture be Antique, Vintage or Shabby Chic…

Life at Shabby Shik Emporium

Well it’s been a pretty good merry go round since we started out here last June 2014 as Shabby Shik Emporium.

There has of course been good weeks and very bad weeks but for the love of what we do it is worth it.

We’ve had some good finds and some rubbish finds, some of the pieces we could put right and others we just had to take a hit on the chin and try not let all the tears smarten down to fast.

We have all heard the saying, “the customer is always right” well sadly that’s not always the case. But where would we be without them.!!

What I can tell you is, since the day we opened our doors the real customers that we started out with have come back time and time again that in itself says we can only be doing something right.

The other thing I found is that things come in and I say Oh My God what have I done, but I put them out into the cabin (or the cabinet as our little neighbour calls it) πŸ˜‡ and think I’ll just stick them in a corner but before I know those are the pieces that have all sold. So it’s true there is something for everyone it may not be my taste but chances are it is someone else’s.

We’ve bought in some pieces which have been disappointing in the sales department, Hand Made Jewellery which is absolutely beautiful and Vintage dress’s and gowns and both have bombed. There is nothing wrong with the those pieces but the customers maybe rightly would rather spend their money on an antique or vintage piece of Glass, Ceramic or Furniture piece.

Oh well It’s a lesson not to be repeated right off πŸ˜ͺ ! trying to run before we can walk. But in saying that, ok so it’s not for now, but who knows trends change maybe we could try either of them again at a later stage.

So what has been our best buys !
Well our Special Christy Yashor bears, but how could anyone resist these beautiful guy and girls Bears. Made from Vintage and Antique Fabrics and Lace They are an heirloom of the future that’s for sure.🐻

Some of the pieces I personally
have loved are the Victorian Writing/Stationary Boxs, because these really appeal to me and are something that I have a great affinity for. Both my favourites were sold as soon as they landed on the counter.πŸ˜„

In the furniture, my two favourite pieces have been a beautiful Victorian Queen Anne Walnut bow fronted writing desk, a truly beautiful piece.

The second is a Victorian, Mahogany Ladies/work desk it has the most beautiful mother of pearl
inlay design worked into the drawer fronts. It comes with a Beautiful Victorian Spoon back Leather seated chair. This one would make a fantastic Valentines gift! It’s a treasure a piece and if taken care of should yield the initial investment and some.

Some of the other great pieces we have been blessed to find are our
Paul Marius French Vintage Leather Satchel and Hand bags. πŸ‘œπŸ‘πŸ‘›πŸ’›
They have now been shipped up and down and all over this country.
Being snatched up by students, teachers, professors, doctors , vets and more.
Be sure to look out for some of there new designs in the next few weeks.

We also have some really really great Mirrors. Here are some from our collection they are from different periods and styles. The Vintage Trio Hand Painted Mirror is another excellent piece.

And our pieces of Shabby Chic which I love they are such a collective mix ! And mixed with the right brown furniture it can throw a whole new light into a room.
We have dressing chests, Library Chairs, Chest of Drawers, Display cabinets and much more the list is endless. So Please do Pop in if only for a quick look around we’d love to see you.

And last but not least we have some beautiful glass and ceramic collections
There are Tea sets, Tea and Coffee Sets, Dinner Services, Water Jugs original pottery pieces and figurines and some from a local pottery pieces to.

We’d like your help if you could!
We would like you to tell us what Antique, Vintage or Unique pieces
you are looking for and just maybe can’t find having searched everywhere.
So if you could please email it to us here at shabbyshikemporium@gmail.com
We’ll see if we can maybe come up with something.

There is just one other piece I would like to share with you. When our good customer Mary came in and saw this beautiful Edwardian Sewing box, that was it she just had to have it. The Edwardian box itself is just beautiful with a fabulous boxwood inlay set into rosewood, inside the box is lined with a Blue Silver Silk and cushioned. The padded top tray is in great condition with its pin box set under its velvet pad.
So Mary did a hit and run before I changed my mind and who could blame her. πŸ˜€

So here’s one last piece to leave you with, this Beautiful French Oak Art Novae Side table ideal for storing your albums books as a very good photographer pointed out, or magazines etc, and at a ver reasonably priced of €195…

<img src="https://jeanne65.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/img_4607.jpg" alt="IMG_4607" class="alignnone size-fu

We also now and again buy in personal pieces from our customers but only pieces that we may feel would be suitable for our store, and sometimes it all comes down to money. We are also limited on space so it would also come down to size too. But we will certainly do our best to have a look and see what we can doπŸ˜„

Ok thank you be sure and keep a look out for next weeks blog.
And check out what new stock we have on the way😊

It’s a never ending story !!!

So we’re Still learning every day from the smallest piece up to our greatest pieces…

Do you ever walk in to someone’s home and go wow what I wouldn’t give from a room like that ? Well I do all the time and I often wonder what it is that gives a room that wow factor without breaking the bank, and I have firmly come to the conclusion that a room doesn’t have to be full of wonderful things to make it a success, know all it needs is one beautiful, unusual or even statement piece to give it the wow factor. πŸ˜€
Let’s say you have a lot of dark wood well then make your wow piece a bright shabby chic piece or reverse the state of play and add a dark piece to a room full of brighter pieces. A large piece of glass or ceramic art on a side table or even a large ornate mirror.
My advise for a large room would be to work with 2 pieces from the above on opposite sides of the room.
I love a lamp rather then the glare of over head lighting but I prefer where possible lamps that are not overly ornate as they are less likely to date.
In a living room I like to mix leather with fabrics with either one leather and two fabric sofa’s or the opposite just as long as the colours blend. A study with a day-bed is always good, again go for one piece that will add richness. Here I would suggest your main piece will be either the day-bed or your study/work desk. Let’s say you have a Victorian Davenport with a single davan with a bright patchwork or kantha and some rich coloured cussions and throws, and if you don’t have a book case just use bookends or add some shelves

Taking The Good With The Bad

Well it’s been a while since my last post here we had a lot going on we’ve been busy which is great, people are beginning to find us here at the Shabby Shik Emporium and are surprised when they do.
It’s so lovely to hear their compliments and they all say the same thing “You just don’t find to many places like this anymore, it’s great” So at least I feel like we made the right decision I know it will take time and I’m trying my best to do what I can to help it along.

Our furniture is loved and moving, our Patchwork and Handmade Bears seem to get legs and roll out of there own accord in the nicest possible way of course our ceramics and glass which I suppose was a little slower then our other pieces is now to heading out the door without a backward glance.
We have now also added Vintage Clothing to see how that goes it’s slow for now so I’m not to sure just yet as it’s early days we have also added Indian Katha’s to the mix and so far so good.

I’d love to do more local craft work if I could it’s just finding the space really. I seen some local Patchwork Quilting work by my good friend here Cathy and oh my god talk about Devine I asked her why she doesn’t sell them and she told me honestly it wouldn’t pay her and I can understand where she is coming from some people just don’t get it.
To some I sell secondhand furniture, bears and bags and old books. And I just don’t get that they can’t see that the Georgian elbow chair they are sitting in is over a hundred and fifty years old and has been seat in my generations, has a history beyond anything we can imagine and has been lovely preserved so it can last another hundred years or more. It’s the same with books some of our Children’s books are over a hundred years old, one lady recently said ‘you can buy a new one in a shop for less than that !’ This was an 1934 copy of Winnie the Pooh it’s second edition in perfect condition πŸ™‚ at the point I give up, it can be so frustrating and I just want to close the door and head back to bed and say sod it. But I realise to it can be so rewarding there are horses for courses and we just have to take the good with the not so good on the journey then I just settle down and get stuck in again.

There is nothing more satisfying then finding a piece in need of TLC that needs to be taking back to the beauty it once was to get the juices flowing in the brain. Maybe at some stage when I find the right project we’ll do a step by step for you here on Jennies World. We also plan to do a Video piece on Shabby Shik Emporium in the next few weeks so you can put a face to our little store and stock.

Ok so I’m going to leave you with some pic’s of some of the stock you haven’t seen before hopefully πŸ™‚ !!! And I promise not to leave it so long next time. πŸ™‚

Time For A Little Break

Well guys let’s see where we’re at oh yes, well things have been running along nicely at the cabinet or I should the Shabby Shik Emporium πŸ™‚
We’ve had some wonderful help and made some lovely new friends already. It’s amazing the people that have found us and come by to buy something or other that they saw online. πŸ™‚

One lady In particular has been wonderful support and reposts all our Facebook messages or sale items, it’s amazing it’s always people you don’t actually know at all that step up to the plate and are delighted for you. πŸ™‚

I always try to support others who’s pages are posted on Facebook maybe not all of them but I do as many as I come across. I believe we should support our own, when I went looking for items we were going to sell I approached all Irish company’s or self employed people for what I needed some pieces are impossible to get so we had to look further afield. And those I have imported from and the self employed have gone out of their way to make sure the items we bought were delivered on time as promised. πŸ™‚
Whereas several of the larger Irish company’s have been I’m sad to say nothing but down right rude and condescending. ;(
People want to know why Ireland is falling apart, well guys wake up and smell the coffee because if you keep up the way you are going that closed sign on your door is gonna be stuck like glue and it’s gonna stay that way for sometime to come.

There is a driver of a courier company that calls with our deliveries and I dread to see him coming I don’t know if the man has problems in his life or not but I wish whatever it is he just wouldn’t bring it to my door. ;(

Ok on a more positive note we were delighted to have received the opportunity to sell the most beautiful Vintage leather hand and luggage bags all hand made from Vintage buffalo leather in France and we are just one of two stores in Ireland selling their products and we are so excited about our first delivery of Paul Marius bags they really are beautiful. πŸ™‚

We had a wonderful week away in the Canary Islands I did absolutely nothing for the week I didn’t as much as put my head outside the door of the hotel just sat by the pool during the day and as soon as I had my bath it was bed for me. The girls came back in evening for a chat before hitting the bed themselves and that’s how the week went. The flight was long and the pain exhausting it can of took a little of the good out of the break but there wasn’t a whole lot we could do about that.
The next trip is first class or not at all that’s for sure. πŸ™‚

Ok it’s a short one this week folks do remember if you are in the North Kerry area do pop out and see us and say hello maybe have a cupa while you are here we’d love to see you… πŸ™‚

The Wonders Of The Web

Well I think a lot of you know we also sell direct from our store page on Facebook. So that last week has been quite busy pricing every stock piece we have, before we leaving for holidays in Furteventura in the Canaries for a week. So I hope you won’t miss us to much. πŸ˜‰ but to be honest I’m so not looking forward to it.;(

For any of you wanting to call to the store you can do so, we are leaving our main man in charge and he’ll take care of the store. But any thing that goes through our Facebook page store I will be dealing with direct from my sun lounger I hope. I’ll still be taking care of the page and our products and relaying any deliveries to our man in charge. So no worries I just hope we have a store to come home too. πŸ™‚ but no really the man of the house has more then enough experience in retail to get by. πŸ™‚

No really I have to admit I am so not looking forward to this trip. Having to be hauled up the steps on a skinny Plint and hoisted into my seat is a nightmare and it’s at this point I just want to go home ;(

Anyway some of you may be unaware that we also sell some really cool handbags, we also have a fantastic selection of Paul Marius Vintage buffalo leather bags, idea for the new student the bags will fit everything from your laptop to your a4 folders. There bags are from a French designer and are excellent value. I have never seen such tailored pieces. Also It would be a really lovely gift for Father’s Day.
And the bigs sell from €89 + €14 postage and the messenger bags are €99.95 plus €14 postage or call in and buy from direct from our store.

Our customers have very kindly gotten behind us and have been encouraging us to cater for something for everyone and we are really hoping that we do.
But even new products have to have that vintage retro look and feel to it. πŸ™‚

We had a lot of small delivery’s this week, from our jewellery to our beautiful silk shawls, rag dolls, our beautiful oilcloth messenger bags and of course the beautiful Red Tote bag by London Access.
With post going out to Meath, Cork Dublin and Tipp, thank you all for your custom we really do appreciate it. πŸ™‚

We’d like to do something special for an official opening if anyone has any ideas we ‘d very much like to hear them. We had thought we’d have a tea by the sea party what do you think ?
I’ll Leave you to think on it and I will leave you with some pic’s of what’s to come. I just know you will love them all πŸ™‚

We have sent out parcels to Tipp, Dublin, Cork , Meath20140609-234110-85270361.jpg20140609-234110-85270639.jpg20140609-234110-85270887.jpg

Grand Opening On Hold But Not For Long !!!

Well folks I do what I usually do, kill myself pulling and dragging what I shouldn’t and then end up on the flat of my back which is exactly what happened on Friday after going at it like a mad woman all week. πŸ˜€ !!!

But still it turned out to be great weekend weather wise and and store wise even though apart from advertising on Facebook to say we were opening we didn’t do anymore then hang the beach toys outside the door. This was enough to have a few people wondering in good for us.

Of course we had painters in painting the outside of our property, which after 8 years standing naked to the world was not before time πŸ™‚ !!!
I would add a pic but I’d need to be on the other side of the road before I could do that. Sadly the painter needs to come back again because we ran out of paint for the top coat on the reveres and tops of the outside walls and when hubby went to woodies they were all out. So this now means another days work to finish it off.

My little fury friends our cats arrived down this weekend to and had a taste of freedom outside which was good for them. It’s not possible to let them out in Limerick as the road up there is crazy busy. And we have lost many of our little friends up there so it was purely out of safety we kept them inside. I am just hoping they won’t wonder to far off the beating track here. The road can also be busy but at least here they have over an acre to wonder around before the reach the road. I have to admit I was worried but in fairness they are taking it easy they are not wondering to far let’s hope it stays like that. πŸ™‚ !!!

Well the store came together it’s good the girls didn’t get here until Saturday but the man of the house did some Stirling work for which I am very grateful and Ness got stuck into it today with the pricing which can be very time consuming as everything and I mean everything had to be not just priced but coded and logged.

Our eldest daughter had her second exhibition this weekend and even though they weren’ to far away she opted to stay over there with the other exhibitors to lend her support. Which I think was very good of her.

So schools out for the summer well at least for the secondary schools. But exams start on Wednesday and to everyone one of you sitting these exams please try not to stress, do what you can yes, give it your best shot yes, as you finish each paper that’s it it’s done don’t look back that papers it’s over just head on to the next and apply the same principle here. I wish each and everyone of you the very best wish’s and I know a very smart young teacher who says, you’ll get whatever or wherever is meant to be for you and she is so right.
There is nothing to say you can’t try again it’s never the end of the road. And I know now from experience she is so right she so is, how she got so wise I don’t know but I do know the knowledge she imparts to her students will stand them the test of time and I love her for it.

Well guys my week as you have just read was very sedate in comparison to last week.
I’ll leave you with a few pic’s of the store which I had taken on Friday there have been a few changes already well you know yourself, you move the piece to fifty different other places before putting it back where you had it in the first place πŸ™‚

Cheers folks we’ll catch up again next week.20140602-205501-75301091.jpg
